LoRUSSO, Mary (Sciola)-Homemaker, activist, realty proprietor. Of North Everett, passed away January 16, 2010 at Bear Hill Nursing Home in Stoneham. She was 84. Mary was born in Orsogna, Abruzzo, Italy October 10, 1925 high on the Apennine mountain range near the Adriatic Sea. In 1934 Mary and her mother traveled from Naples, Italy on the cruise ship, Rex, the fastest and most luxurious liner of the day. Arriving in New York City, they stayed briefly meeting her father there and later the family traveled to Boston’s North End. In 1941 the family moved to North Everett into their own home. In 1942 she graduated from Michael Angelo High School and then worked in the Boston area as a seamstress. She had many suitors and eventually married in June 1945 to Mr. John LoRusso, a highly decorated aviator who was returning home from the European air war. After honeymooning in Northern New England, the couple was transferred to the US Army Air Corp base at Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the eventual departure to the west coast. However, with VJ Day September 1945 and the end of WWII they returned back east settling in Boston’s West End. Mary began family life raising three sons and later acquired land to build their own brick cobblestone ranch in 1954 in North Everett, which she personally planned and designed. Gradually over time several realty properties were acquired and managed successfully. She also became involved in community organizations such as St. Therese Ladies Sodality, Catholic Charities, My Brother’s Table, and the Salvation Army. At Everett’s Seniors Club she was active in elder affairs, a member of the Everett/Malden Orsogna Club she was involved with immigrant concerns, at the Schiavo Club she organized travel ventures around the country, and with the Melrose VFW Armory Post she was an advocate for disabled veterans. In her younger days she enjoyed traveling around North America and Europe. She was fond of dining, music, culinary arts, gardening, family, and faith. Her motto was do good, be charitable, have empathy. She was the beloved wife for 53 years to the late John A. LoRusso. Dearest mother of Joseph A. LoRusso of Stoneham, Richard J. LoRusso and his wife Jo Anne of New Orleans, LA, John A. LoRusso and his wife Camille of Dracut. Cherished grandmother of Dina Overland and her husband Dean, and Kathryn LoRusso all of Metairie, LA. Loving sister of Anthony “Tony” Sciola and his wife Charlotte of Wenham, and Luciano “Sonny” Sciola and his wife Grace of Saugus. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a funeral from the J.F. Ward Funeral Home, 772 Broadway, Everett, on Thursday, January 21st, at 9 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 250 Revere St., Revere, at 10 AM. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday and Wednesday from 4-8 PM. Entombment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. In lieu of flowers donations in Mary’s memory may be made to Mass General Hospital Cancer Center, 165 Cambridge St., Suite 600, Boston, MA 02114 or to the charity of your choice.
